ROTARY DOMES have a sliding shutter window, that opens only a slit to the sky, thereby optimally protecting the telescope against gusts of wind.

A rotary dome moves in sync with the telescope and the sky, always providing an unobstructed view for the telescope. This makes operating a rotary dome a bit more complicated in comparison with clamshell domes and roll-off observatories.

Software takes care of the synchronization of the telescope and the dome.

Tradiional rotary domes have long been the dome of choice, even for very big observatories. Today, special and more dedicated constructions have take over, even to the point that dome itself is the telescope.
